Goodguys 21st PPG Nationals - 2018

07/12/2018

Mooresville, NC - The Goodguys 21st PPG Nationals, something that we like to call "the big one." Each and every year we look forward to driving up to Columbus, OH and taking a shot at the Sponsor Shootout, New Product Awards, and of course the Street Machine/Hot Rod of the Year Awards. We are proud to say that the 2018 trip to Columbus was very successful for Detroit Speed, Inc.

The most attended show on the Goodguys circuit held up to tradition. With thousands of car counts and record crowds, the industry was booming with car enthusiasts, racers and families enjoying a good time. After a hot June in the Midwest, a cool front rolled through Thursday night making for extremely pleasant conditions in Columbus. Low to mid-80s were felt with low humidity Friday through Sunday with full sunshine all weekend. We couldn't ask for better car show weather, it was perfect!

The 21st PPG Nats turned into an award-winning weekend for the Detroit Speed Team. We took home two major pieces of hardware this year. The first was New Product of the Year in the Electrical Components category for our newly released 1969-70 Mustang Selecta-Speed™ Wiper Kit. The second award was for one of the industry’s most esteemed recognitions, the Goodguys Street Machine of the Year, which was awarded to Detroit Speed’s 1969 ‘TUX’ Camaro built for long-time customer, Stuart Adams. 'TUX' is one of those builds that you can sit and examine for countless hours to discover the thousands of modifications that have been made. This one of a kind 1969 Camaro embodies who we are as a company – appealing looks without sacrificing function (which Kyle proudly displayed with an Autocross hot lap and a big smoky burnout).

Another key part to our trip to Columbus was Kyle Tucker's opportunity to choose the Top 10 Builder's Choice awards. As the 2017 Goodguys Trendsetter recipient, this is a PPG Nationals obligation, and honor. Kyle's picks varied from Pro-Touring to classy, traditional style hot rods. Congratulations to all of the award winners!

Things were just as busy over at the Autocross course. Detroit Speed had four cars in competition - Kyle Tucker in the 1987 Camaro DSE-Z representing Fuel Curve, Ryan Mathews in the 1972 Corvette running for Holley, and Bryan Johnson representing JRI Shocks in Detroit Speed’s 1970 Camaro. We had also invited out 17 year old Michael Bradshaw to run his FIRST EVER Autocross event in Detroit Speed’s 1965 Mustang shop car which was newly equipped with a Holley Sniper EFI. Michael made us proud throughout the entire weekend, getting faster and faster with each lap. Look out future competitors!

The BFG Garage continues to be a valued resource at the Autocross course. More and more customers find the Garage to be useful for everything from air pressure adjustments to suspension set up changes and full-on repairs. The BFG Garage team serviced it all in Columbus! In addition to tending to the race cars, the BFG Garage team hosted the 2nd Annual BFGoodrich/Detroit Speed Cookout in Columbus on Friday night. Providing a full summer cookout meal including hamburgers, hot dogs, pasta salad and broccoli salad, the event was a success. Bench racing, laughter and quality time with friends and family is what Goodguys, Detroit Speed and BFGoodrich are all about!

Up next for the Detroit Speed Tour is Motorstate Challenge in Watervaliet, Michigan July 19th-21th, Hot August Nights in Reno, Nevada August 7th-12th and Corvettes at Carlisle in Carlisle, Pennsylvania August 23rd-26th. Hopefully you can make it out to see us, and be sure to check in to our Speed Tour to keep up with where we'll be next.
